Featuring one of the largest booths at AWWA ACE25, Xylem showcased it’s PFAS piloting and its smart water solutions capabilities in Denver.

Xylem PFAS pilot testing capabilities
As water utilities gear up to meet the compliance deadline for the PFAS Maximum Contaminant Levels, Xylem’s PFAS piloting system takes aim at giving utilites the information they need to make treatment decisions.

For Orange County Water District, Xylem deployed three separate skids for PFAS pilot testing that allowed the utility to test eight different granular activated carbons (GAC), four ion exchange resins (IEX), and two more novel adsorbent materials. Similarly, the company ran tests with GAC and IEX for a South Florida utility that had a mix of PFAS chemicals present in its water system.

Patricia Tinnerino, senior sales engineer for Xylem, noted the importance of gathering data and testing different options — whether full or bench scale — to find the most optimal solution as every utility’s stream has its own characteristics.

Geoffrey Pellechia, Xylam PFAS program manager, said Xylem’s capabilities in testing numerous media solutions and materials gives utilities the opportunity to narrow down their focus, leading utility leaders to the best and correct PFAS removal decision for their utility.

Xylem Vue
Last December, Xylem increased its investment into Idrica, aquiring a majority stake in the company that has built and innovated the Xylem Vue platform.

The software is integrated, secure and offers vendor-agnostic analytics and data capture from any utility source, even if those sources are legacy solutions. The Smart Water Engine is the foundation of the software’s capabilities as it integrates everything into one uniified source of information for utilities. The date it intgegrates can come from business systems, asset management, sensors throughout the network and even the SCADA system.

Xylem calls this unification of data and analytics information “360-degree operational intelligence,” as it can also provide what-if scenarios for utility aministrators and operators. Whether through alarms or alerts for out of specification data points, real-time monitoring, or suggested actions to optimize the system, the software aims to help utilities make good decisions more often and more quickly.
